Clean the Air

Our July 25th virtual #CleanAir Event featured expert sessions with Dr. Allen Haddrell (Aerosol Scientist from University of Bristol), Dr. Angelique Corthals (SARS-CoV-2 Biomedical Researcher and Associate Prof. at CUNY), and Aaron Collins (Mask Nerd, Mechanical Engineer with a background in aerosol science). This free event, hosted by MaskTogetherAmerica coordinator Sarah Cahill, covered airborne transmission of pathogens, the importance of clean air, and how to keep each other safe.

Elevated carbon dioxide lets Sars-CoV-2 live far longer in droplets By Maria Burke17 May 2024

The Covid-19 virus is more stable in air containing high levels of carbon dioxide, typical of poorly ventilated indoor spaces, new research claims. This means it lasts longer and is more likely to infect people. Even a moderate rise in carbon dioxide results in a significant increase in the risk of disease transmission, confirming the importance of good ventilation.

Most people contract Covid-19 after inhaling aerosol-containing droplets of the Sars-CoV-2 virus from the surrounding air.

Filter-Free, Harmless, and Single-Wavelength Far UV-C Germicidal Light for Reducing Airborne Pathogenic Viral Infection

Germicidal lamps that primarily emit 254 nm ultraviolet (UV) radiation have been effectively utilized for surface sterilization, but they cannot be used on human skin and eyes due to their harmful and genotoxic activity. Recent reports have shown that far UV-C light (207–222 nm) can efficiently kill pathogens with potentially no harm to exposed human tissues. However, these methods still require additional filtering and/or further protective equipment. In this study, we demonstrate a filter-free, harmless, and single-wavelength far UV-C 207 nm germicidal light source that can be used to inactivate different respiratory viruses. It can be exploited as a safe and effective disinfection tool for various airborne viruses. We successfully developed a single-wavelength far UV-C source that produces an exact wavelength of 207 nm. We examined its safety on human skin and corneal cell lines, as well as its effects on inactivating different airborne viruses, such as coronavirus, adenovirus, and vaccinia virus.

COVID-19: Improving indoor ventilation

Good ventilation helps protect against the spread of COVID-19. It replaces indoor air with outdoor air, which can reduce the number of infectious particles indoors. Air filtration can also help by removing particles from the air.

The larger a gathering, the more likely it is that someone with COVID-19 is present. When they breathe, they release infectious particles into the air. These particles build up faster in small indoor spaces.

Air Cleaners, HVAC Filters, and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

When used properly, air cleaners and HVAC filters can help reduce airborne contaminants including viruses in a building or small space. By itself, air cleaning or filtration is not enough to protect people from COVID-19. When used along with other best practices recommended by CDC and other public health agencies, including social distancing and mask wearing, filtration can be part of a plan to reduce the potential for airborne transmission of COVID-19 indoors.

Air Cleaners and Air Filters in the Home

The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air. In addition, research shows that filtration can be an effective supplement to source control and ventilation. Using a portable air cleaner and/or upgrading the air filter in your furnace or central heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system can help to improve indoor air quality. Portable air cleaners, also known as air purifiers or air sanitizers, are designed to filter the air in a single room or area.

LET'S CLEAR THE AIR ALBERTA

We are a Grassroots Group of community, safety and science minder folks (made up of teachers, HCWs, engineers, scientists/researchers, etc). We are parents and teachers concerned about indoor air quality.

We started with a goal of getting better clean air in Alberta schools, by increasing ventilation and filtration.

We think that an important step on the journey is a wider community understanding of the importance of clean indoor air and acceptance of the tools that can help enable this.

Note from The Covidtoolbox: This is a very extensive website that will answer many questions about cleaning the air and it provides many additional resources.

Covid is in the air

To inform and bring together elements allowing everyone to act in the context of an airborne virus epidemic.

The goal? Reduce epidemic circulation and allow everyone to reintegrate social life into correct safety conditions. We want to inform you of the airborne nature of the COVID-19 virus, and its consequences for everyone, act to ensure that essential places are accessible to as many people as possible and protect in particular the most vulnerable, and our children.

International Coalition Performing Arts Aerosol Study

As the United States is experiencing another variant of the coronavirus, questions about music activity abound as we move into 2022. With the contagiousness of the omicron variant of the SarsCov2 currently having a high degree of community spread in many areas of the country, we highly encourage everyone to use all of the study’s mitigations during this surge.

Can We Clean the Air

Nina Notman talks to the experts about what is needed to remove pollutants and even infectious diseases from the air inside our homes, schools and offices.

‘The very first canon of nursing, the first and last thing upon which a nurse’s attention must be fixed… is this: to keep the air that he breathes as pure as the external air, without chilling him. Yet what is so little attended to? Even when it is thought about at all, the most extraordinary misconceptions reign about it.’
